Expectations are a subtle form of revenge. By expecting something of someone else, you hold them accountable to a promise they never made (because you never asked), so when they invariably fail to meet the criteria (which live only in your mind), you believe you have a right to be revengeful. The alternative: If you want something, ask. If they say yes, you’ve got a deal. If they say no, you don’t. Simple.
